History of the 6mm Remington cartridge:
The 6mm Remington was introduced in 1963 to replace the 244 Remington cartridge, due to a change in the rifling twist from a 1 in 12 for the 244 Remington rifles to a 1 in 9 twist for the 6mm Remington rifles.
This was done so Remington could load bullets larger then the 90 grain used in the 244, as basically the 1 in 12 twist in the .244 Remington could not stabilize bullets over 90 grains in weight.
Even though the cases are the same size on the 244 Remington and 6mm Remington, they are considered two different cartridges due to different loadings and different head-stamp and different twist needed in the rifle barrels.
