History of the 40 Smith & Wesson Cartridge:
The .40 Smith & Wesson, aka 40 S&W, is a 10×22mm (10mm diameter, 22mm long case) rimless pistol cartridge developed jointly by the Smith & Wesson Company and Winchester Ammunition Company around 1989 for the F.B.I.
The 40 Smith & Wesson is basically a shorten version of the 10 mm Auto (10x25mm) which was introduced in 1983, just a few years before the 40 S&W.
Interestingly the 40 S&W has almost the same ballistics as the 10mm Auto in a shorter cartridge, enabling the 40 S&W to be used in a smaller grip frame then the 10mm Auto, which was well received by the FBI over the 10mm Auto they were testing at that time.
Today it is used by many Laws enforcement agencies, and many of the worlds military and also chambered in some rifles.
