History of 357 Magnum cartridge:
The .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum, a/k/a .357 Magnum or .357 MAG was developed by Major Douglas Wesson and Philip Sharpe and introduced in 1935 by Smith & Wesson for the heavy-frame revolver.
The cartridge is based on a .38 S&W Special lengthened by 1/10 of an inch, so it would not be chambered in the lower pressure .38 special revolvers. At the time of its introduction, it was the most powerful revolver cartridge until the .44 Remington Magnum was introduced in 1955.
The .357 Magnum was and still is a popular cartridge with law enforcement, hunting and target shooters.
