One Cartridge not a Box: .30-03 using Winchester Brass cases, head stamped “W.R.A. Co. 30 G 1903″ loaded with a “Rounded Jacketed Soft Point bullet.
Brief story of the .30-01, .30-03 and .30-06:
The .30-03 (1903 30G) cartridge was one of two cartridges that ended up becoming the famous .30-06 (1906 30G) Cartridge.
The story goes:
With the availability of smokeless power in the late 1800s, the move to smaller diameter bullets, lead to the 30 Krag (1892) Rimmed Cartridge (also called aka: 30 Army, 30-40 Krag).
In 1901 the U.S. Military started work on a more powerful rimless cartridge that ended up being call the .30-01 “thick rimless case.
By 1903 the thinner rimless .30-03 was introduced with a “rounded bullet” and used in the (then new) famous Model 1903 Springfield bolt-action rifle.
In October of 1906, the U.S. Military was loading the .30-03 with a pointed “spritzer” bullet and renamed the the .30-06 the .30-06 (aka .30-06 Springfield, ought 6) and used in the (then new) Model 1906 Springfield bolt-action rifle.
